Vaneer read out the tournament invite,
“Greetings from his
Supreme and Initiable Magnificence Castruccio Irovetti, … ”
Vaneer smirked before saying “Ego much!?!”
“by the grace of the
gods the rightful King of Pitax, Marvel of Numeria, Master Mormouth, and
Prince-Regent of the Sellen.”
“I think someone is over compensating if you know what I
mean” Miro chuckled and winked at Vaneer,
“Well we know who will be doing the boasting for Pitax at
least” Vaneer snorted,
“It is with great
delectation and delight that I greet you, my fellow River Kings. I would be honoured
if you would accept my invitation to attend the seventh annual Rushlight
Tournament as my guests. I know you be discerning rulers, and trust you would
not dare miss such an extravagance, for I plan for this to be the finest
Rushlight yet! And to sweeten the pot, as it were, I have secured a mighty
magical item, a gold and gemstone rod of lordly might, which I am willing to
bestow upon the Kingdom that proves itself by fielding the true Rushlight
Champion! Could this champion be one of your own?”
Vaneer yawned, “Sounds a bore, we’d beat them no matter what
so they might as well just give us the reward”
Miro grunted and nodded in agreement
“Eeeer my lord?” came a nervous voice from the side
The pair turned to their heads to notice that the Pitax
herald that brought the invite was still standing there as they realise that he
had obviously heard their conversation.
“I’m no lord boy!” Vaneer boomed making the herald take a
step back in fright,
“But….but the letter is meant for King Otto only, you said
you were he!” the herald stammered,
“We said nothing of the sort, you just merely assumed he was
Otto” Miro hissed with an evil stare,
“You know what Miro, I think we keep the message and not
tell Otto but obviously the boy needs dealing with as he knows too much, do you
not agree?” Vaneer raised an eyebrow at Miro,
The blood in the herald’s face gave way turning him a
ghostly white as he realised what he was listening and showed clear signs that
he was about to faint whilst wetting himself when both Miro and Vaneer burst
into laughter.
“Oh! don’t be so serious lad!” Miro exclaimed whilst
laughing and struggling to catch his breath,
“We’re not gonna kill you so relax, what sort of kingdom do
you think we’re running here to consider killing young men carrying messages!”
Vaneer snorted before throwing Miro a stare to keep quiet as he obviously
raised a finger to answer that question,
“Come on, then!” Vaneer held out the parchment to the herald
with a smile on his face,
“Sir?” the Herald questioned,
Vaneer sighed, “Oh dear Miro, its seems Pitax might be
missing a brain cell or two. Come on lad, take the parchment and we’ll take you
to Otto”,
“King Otto?” the herald question,
“Yeah, yeah ‘King’ Otto” Miro teased.
Otto read the message and the council was gathered, the
discussion was short and the council agreed that Dragonmere should attend the
tournament and sent the herald on his way with their decision.
The debate about whom from the kingdom should represent them
at the tournament took a bit longer though, ideas where thrown out like Zamas
the phase spider, Sagroc, Lady Quintessa Maray and Auchs but they were
eventually ruled out leaving the following agreed participants.
